Studying Surah Nisa - Day 1 - Holding the ties of kinship

Bismillah hir rahman nir rahim
In the name of Allah, the beneficent, the merciful

"O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever an All-Watcher over you."

I started my study of Surah Nisa today which was actually my goal of Ramadan 2019. Unfortunately, I couldn’t complete it during Ramadan and lost touch of it even after Ramadan. Today, I thought of starting it from beginning and also capturing my learnings from the study. I covered the first verse today.

The Surah starts by addressing the whole of mankind. Allah swt gives the following commands to all of us (the whole mankind) in this verse -
  1. To be dutiful to our lord (Allah Swt)
  2. To fear Allah swt
  3. To not cut the relationships of the womb (which in other word can also mean blood relations)
  4. Allah is ever an all watcher over all of us

The verse also talks about -
  1. Allah swt created Adam PBUH
  2. From him Allah swt created Eve PBUH
  3. and from both of them Allah swt created all of us

My learnings

Encouraged Universal Brotherhood
By saying that all of us are created from the same parent, Allah swt is encouraging universal brotherhood. What it means is that everyone on the face of the earth is my brother (and sister) in humanity. So, I should not think of them as outside the family, its one big family. How can then I cheat anyone? Or mistreat anyone? or hurt anyone? etc because we don’t do that with our brothers and sisters.

Holding blood relations
In today’s world, we see a lot of siblings in not good terms with each others. We also see father and son, mother and daughter and the combination of above to be not in good terms with each others. In this verse, Allah swt commands us to not cut the relations at all. In fact in one of the Hadith of the Prophet PBUH, he said that the one who severs the blood relation will not enter paradise! (Bukhari) Now that’s a big big big statement to make! This tells us how important are blood relations in Islam and regardless of what happened between the family, we should make sure that the family members don’t act like enemies. We should make sure that we resolves all of our differences and live harmoniously amongst ourselves.

Mothers are extremely important
Though, this verse directly doesn’t speak about the importance of mothers, its interesting to see how Allah swt decides to put across the point of holding blood relations. So, if relations that are from the mothers are so important, we can only imagine how important is it to keep relation with our mother. May be later, I will write on the importance of Mothers in islam.

Allah swt is watching us
Just before the verse ends, Allah swt mentions that he is ever watcher over all of us. Remember the time when we commit something wrong just because we feel that no one is watching or no one will come to know? All of us have had such incidents in life but here Allah swt says that he is watching us regardless of how alone we are, regardless of how much in seclusion we are and regardless of how much in dark we are. This last part should actually be enough for us to make sure we act right in public and in private.

Overall, its a great start to the study of this surah, the first verse itself gives so much to ponder on. So, I felt I will stop here for today, will continue to post as I keep studying this surah inshAllah.

And Allah swt knows best.

The decision of Hajj: My Journey to Hajj with My Father

<Thanks to my wife for this sketch> Since I can remember, my mother had always expressed her deep desire to embark on the sacred pilgrimage of Hajj. It was a dream she held close to her heart since her childhood, an aspiration she longed to fulfill. Despite traveling outside India to places like Canada, Singapore and Malaysia, she yearned for Hajj to be her first journey beyond the borders of her homeland. However, as the saying goes, "We plan and Allah also plans, and He is the best planner" (Quran 8:30). Allah had different plans for my mother. A few years later, she passed away, and the opportunity to fulfil her lifelong dream of Hajj slipped away. Her departure left a void in our lives, and my father's health began to deteriorate. In 2018, my father suffered a severe heart attack, and the doctors were uncertain if he would survive. By the grace of Allah, he pulled through, defying the odds. As his health remained fragile, the weight of my mother's unfulfille...

Preparing for Hajj: The Physical Fitness

Bismillah ir Rahman ir Rahim (In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful) "And those who strive for Us — We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good." — [Surah Al-Ankabut, 29:69] Assalamu Alaikum everyone, In my last blog, I shared how I made the decision to perform Hajj with my father. Today, I want to take you through our preparation process, which was a crucial part of the journey. Preparation for Hajj is key to ensuring a successful pilgrimage, and it’s something that ideally begins as soon as one embraces Islam or if you are an existing muslim, whenever you reach adulthood. However, it’s never too late to start — once you make the intention or book your trip, the preparation should begin right away. For us, preparation for Hajj was a process that had been unfolding since my childhood. My mother used to constantly narrate the stories of Hajj and Madinah, and my father did the same. These stories planted a seed of excitement a...

A School Event and a Wake-Up Call: Teaching Our Kids About Salah

Bismillah ir Rehman ir Raheem   (In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the most Merciful). "Those who establish regular Prayer, and give regular Charity, and have (in their hearts) the assurance of the Hereafter. These are on (true) guidance from their Lord: and these are the ones who will prosper." (Quran 31:4-5) Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a function at my kids’ school that resembled an Anand Mela . It was a vibrant event where students set up stalls to sell homemade food items and organize games. The school had done an excellent job of organising the event, with staff members guiding groups of 3 to 4 students at each stall. The food options were delightful—paani puri, shawarma, chicken roast, veg burgers—and the games were just as engaging, from tossing balls into glasses to catching (toy) fish within a time limit. We attended the event as a family, and Alhamdulillah, we had a great time. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and joy, creating cheri...
