Bismillah hir Rahmanir Rahim
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Today, I studied verse number 5 and 6. Here is the English translation of it -
"4:5 - And do not give the unwise your property, which Allah has made a means of sustenance for you, but provide for them with it and clothe them and speak to them words of appropriate kindness."
"4:6 - And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age. Then if you perceive in them sound judgement, release their property to them. And do not consume it excessively and quickly, [anticipating] that they will grow up. And whoever, [when acting as guardian], is self-sufficient should refrain [from taking a fee]; and whoever is poor - let him take according to what is acceptable. Then when you release their property to them, bring witnesses upon them. And sufficient is Allah as Accountant."
Quick recap of Day 2 learnings - Allah SWT spoke about marriage and how to deal with orphan’s wealth in the last three verses.
My learnings from these two verses
Allah SWT continues to give commands in these two verses as well. We can drive some very valuable and life long lessons from it. InshaAllah I will try to summarise it here.
- What we earn is given to us by Allah SWT
- Our earning/wealth is a means of sustenance for us
- We should not give our property/wealth to the unwise
- Unwise here could mean (More details here)
- Young people who are yet to achieve sound mind and judgement
- Orphans who are very young
- Anyone who can be medically termed as not of sound mind
- However, we should take care of the unwise around us
- We should take care of their basis necessities
- We should also speak to them with kindness
- This is very important because people who can be termed as unwise are generally mocked in our society, not given any importance, spoken very harshly and what’s more shocking is that a lot times it comes from close family members
- Now Allah SWT moves to the topic of handling the wealth of the orphans
- If we are the caretakers of the property/wealth of the orphans, we should test them until they reach marriageable age for their sound judgement
- If we find them of sound judgement then we should hand over their property/wealth to them
- No caretaker should consume the wealth excessively and quickly fearing that they will have to return the wealth someday, instead the wealth should be spent with at most care
- If the caretaker is well off, he should not take any fee for handling the wealth of the orphan
- However, if the caretaker is poor, he should take whatever is reasonable (Hadith regarding it)
- On returning the wealth, it should be done with proper procedure with witnesses
Wow! Those are quite a lot of lessons in just two verses right? Did I miss any of the other lessons that you have taken, please comment and share inshAllah.
And Allah knows best.
